I like the way the highlights worked, and the step by step process.
Im not a big fan of burring or smudging, that makes more of a mess than anything. The important part about shading is precision and consistency. You did a good job recommending a source of light, that's very important to stay consistent.
I use one layer to color hair, because I believe in KISS (keep it simple stupid). Im more of a cel shading buff, so I usually reccommend sharp strokes for shading and highlights.
